Q. When can I ask for an increase in child support?

A. Child support can be modified any time you can demonstrate a change of circumstances, such as:

A pay raise by the noncustodial parent
Increased needs or expenses of the child

A. Job loss is the most common reason for child support to be reduced, but you must request a reduction from the court and obtain an order reducing child support.

Q. When can I seek a modification of custody?

A. Two years after the last custody order, you must be able to show a change of circumstances. Prior to the lapse of two years, you must prove that both the physical or mental health of your child is endangered.

A. In most cases, courts require divorced parents to contribute to their children's college education expenses. The court will consider each parent’s ability to make a contribution, the child's ability to pay and the child's ability to succeed at college.
